First of all, I would like to thank my good friend *
homanga. He did this wonderful illustration of the
Fantasy Realms characters. You can see the picture below -- please visit his gallery and send him some love!
That said...
It's been over 6 years now since I became a DeviantART member. It was a friend of mine who suggested that DA was "the new hip thing" as far as online galleries went. I had lost interest in
Elfwood around the same time, so I can't say I was exactly thrilled to join another artist networking site. I signed up for an account anyway, but it wasn't until 2004 before I decided to upload some of my illustrations.
The response has been overwhelming from the start. It's such a huge community, and I have met a lot of friendly and kind people. I've spent countless hours browsing the galleries and favorites of my fellow deviants. There are so many talented artists posting their work here, it's hard not to be inspired (or depressed, depending on your attitude).
I will not reach the state of these folks with millions of pageviews and hundreds of thousands of people watching them in the foreseeable future, not with the spaced out updates, lack of fanart/yaoi/furries/boobies, and my reluctance to socialize with other DA members. Considering that, 100,000 pageviews seemed like a suitable milestone to host a
kiriban contest for all the good folks keeping track of my work.
Thanks to everybody who participated in my little raffle. If I ever do another
kiriban, it will be 1,000,000+, so don't hold your breath.
Devious Comments
Elfwood, for years, hasn't been as fun as it used to be. I came over to dA for the same reason back in '03. By the same token, I used to keep an eye on your gallery and read your comic way back when it seemed you couldn't decide where to take it, or how to start it. :3 When I found you here on dA, I was really excited.
I've always loved your art, and though I know that fame isn't everything, I hope you do become well recognized sooner than you think you will.

Would I?!
It's always easy to compare yourself to others in the numbers game but 100k is a major achievement and to have done it without going the fanart/fanservice route says a lot for your skills as an artist.

"You either are a geek, or you work for one."
But you are right: Fan art and grey core stuff is very disproportionately inflated in popularity in terms of page views and such.
On the other hand you'll most likely have quality over quantity so you'll have less of the problems that high traffic deviants get such as trolls.

I tried to join Elfwood years ago but I couldn't even figure out how to submit art. It was really confusing in my opinion, and the community didn't seem that great.
There are lots of mil+ artists here that definitely only have that because of their subject matter (of course there are also those who do deserve it). I honestly think you deserve lots more, but I sometimes think it's even more fulfilling when you watch an artist on DA who -doesn't- have millions of views. It makes you feel like you're actually watching them because of the art, and not because of the popularity. That's something I get from watching you. I'd hardly call you a low profile artist (most of the time if I mention Niko Geyer, people know who I'm talking about) but here on DA I feel like I have a closer connection to you, than if I would if you had millions of pageviews. It has a more personal feeling, if you know what I mean.
